About the Company

API for Africa (APIFA) is a non-profit organization facilitating the local production of Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (APIs) and other health products and technologies (HPTs) in sub-Sahara Africa. APIFA works with a multitude of critical stakeholders from the private sector, public sector, research institutes, and civil society, to address a major market challenge: the lack of not only API manufacturing capacity in sub-Sahara Africa, but also affordable medicines.

At its core, APIFA supports numerous existing pharmaceutical manufacturers as they seek to expand their product portfolio from a focus on finished products into APIs. APIFA employs various tools to facilitate this transition and including debt and/or equity financing, setup assistance, regulatory support, access to technology, cost optimization and quality management advice, as well as pooled resources for improved access to raw materials products and product buyers.

Ultimately, APIFA enables local manufacturing partners achieve backward integration that will benefit both the manufacturers and regional health systems: manufacturers significantly reduce operational and business risk and regional health systems transform as a result of an enhancement of life-saving commodity supply chain resilience through the reduction of API costs, shortening of critical supply chains, and product quality improvements.
